Position Summary:
The Fiber Solutions Engineer is responsible for evaluating dark fiber product requirements; as well as evaluating the appropriate fiber design for metro optical, and IP product requirements during the pre-sales process for all of AboveNet*s enterprise and carrier customers. In addition, the Fiber Solutions Engineer is responsible for all PoP collocation requirements during the pre-sales process. The Fiber Solutions Engineer will interact with Sales and Sales Engineering; as well as with other Solutions Engineers and Engineering disciplines to create conceptual network designs that can be converted into actual, physical designs upon execution of a service order by a customer. The Fiber Solutions Engineer may also be asked by Sales and Sales Engineering to act as a consultant during customer meetings.

Responsibilities:

*Create a fiber/PoP collocation product solution for requested customer networks within the established time intervals; *Identify and design custom networking solutions that take advantage of AboveNet*s existing Engineering and Operational capabilities, to create a supportable product offering; *Identify costs and delivery intervals for the engineered customer network, this may include interaction with Operations personnel; *Maintain a good working knowledge of all databases and systems required to execute the job effectively and efficiently; *Respond to management in the prescribed time frames for all requested reports; *Respond to all internal customers regarding customer network designs in a timely manner; *Support requests from the Sales, Sales Engineering and Business Operations organizations for consultative services as requested; *Complete special projects as required by management; *The Fiber Solutions Engineer must be able to work independently, be creative, and make design decisions on a daily basis regarding various customer network options; *He/she must have the analytical skills necessary to properly evaluate what network options are best for the customer and AboveNet; *Due to the volume and complexity of customer requests, the Fiber Solutions Engineer must have organizational and time management skills necessary to meet/exceed the committed turn-around intervals established for the organization; *The individual must comply with departmental and corporate internal controls and all internal controls processes; *The individual must possess and employ the highest ethical and business standards and always conduct himself/herself with the greatest degree of professional integrity; *Other duties and responsibilities as required.

Requirements:

*A college degree in Telecommunications, Fiber Optics, Engineering or other related field is required or 3-5 years work experience in Telecommunications and/or Fiber Optics; *This position does not require management or supervision of other employees; *Excellent oral and written communications skills are required for effective communications with external and internal customers, as well as management; *Familiarity with computers and Microsoft Office applications is a must; *Working knowledge of Visio tools is a plus; *Working knowledge of Map Point and Smallworld is a plus; *This position requires significant time at a computer; *Travel 5% - 10% when required by the organization.
