The Data Center Technician provides hands-on, day-to-day support for all hardware related installs and moves in the Marshalltown data center. The scope of this position currently includes but is not limited to support and monitoring for all hardware and facility systems located within the Data Center.

Position will include working evening and/or weekend hours as well as non-standard shift configurations that will include night shift

Basic Responsibilities and Objectives Include:
• Install server cabinets, rack & cable devices within cabinet as required
• Maintain cable/LAN layout for data center
• Maintain inventory of all hardware as well as change management documentation
• Provide support to IT operation personnel while troubleshooting operational issues
• Assist with shipping/receiving of computer hardware to and from data center
• Manage tape libraries, perform tape library audits, load & unload tapes for all platforms, manage tape movement between data center and our offsite storage facility
• Operate and monitor computer and peripheral equipment, such as printers, tape and disk drives on an IBM Mainframe
• Maintain an accurate, detailed and up to date documentation about all the equipment in the Data Center
• Monitor and report on data center environmental, fire suppression, and UPS systems
• Escort all visitors needing access to data center, maintain Visitor Access Log
• Provide on-call support for hardware installations, troubleshooting of storage, server, or network equipment after normal business hours


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to respond within 30 minutes to an on-call support need in the Data Center. Individuals must be able to perform each basic responsibility satisfactorily and meet education and experience requirements.

Education and Experience:

• 2 year degree in an Information Technology (IT) related field, or one year of work experience in an IT environment
• Experience at installing and managing servers is preferred
• Experience at installing fiber and copper cable is preferred
• Experience working in a server room or data center is preferred
• Knowledge of AS400/IBM Mainframe is a plus
• Experience working with HP Service Manager and/or DCIM (Data Center Infrastructure Management) tools or similar systems is a plus
• Strong desire and ability to learn; possess excellent problems solving skills
• Solid understanding of basic server concepts, preferably with proven experience
• Good knowledge of Microsoft Office products
• Ability to work in a fast-paced dynamic environment
• Excellent communication and customer service skills
• Self-motivated, with the ability to work in both a team environment and individually
• Must be capable of lifting and transporting computer related hardware up to 40 pounds
