I was thinking about getting this certification. I'm not sure it's worth a whole lot, but I have spent the last year and a half writing ad hoc Oracle SQL all the time, so it shouldn't require too much additional study.

The thing is, my company won't pay for the $3000 prep course, and I'm insecure that there might be stuff on the exam that I haven't run across.

I was just looking at the "self-study" options, and they want $1950 for a single user license training CD!! And it's not even clear that it covers the exact stuff on the exam.

I am sure that the self-study courses have been pirated, but I don't want to go that route.

So should I try to study based on the listed Exam Topics, or try harder to convince my employer to pay for the training?

I suppose that the $125 fee for the exam isn't really that much, but I don't know how hard it is.

I have the same objection to oracle certs. They are insanely expensive, and very rarely required.

I think that SQL Certified Expert cert might be a pretty cheap and easy way to get an Oracle certification on your resume. I've looked over that exam description too, and it doesn't seem like too much more than query writing. I would just buy a decent study guide ($40?) and then take it.

I found this on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Oracle-Database-Expert-Exam-Guide/dp/0071614214/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1257484385&sr=8-1

But does Oracle consider this legit or is it cheating? I don't understand how they can charge over a thousand $ if there are study guides for $40...

While I have been out of work for quite awhile, I have found that most of the interviews I have had want the experience with database administration, and most don't care about certs they want you to be able to do the job.

I don't want to be an administrator, and I'm not out of work at the moment.

Obviously the ability to do the job is primary, but I think I should be certified in anything I'm familiar with, if possible.

I did see an ad that requested the SQL Certified Expert cert recently. I don't know if it's common, but it seems to be out there.

I ordered the book, but it's not out yet, so I will have to wait.

Seems legit to me. For lower-level certs, Oracle does the same as every other cert company: you can spend thousands for training,or you can spend around $40 for a study guide. I am sure you could spend thousands for A+ training, if you wanted to do so.

But, when it comes to higher-level certs, in the newer systems, Oracle requires that you get the $3000 per course training, and that you get that training from Oracle. Oracle has never provided evidence that those who get the expensive Oracle training have learned any more than those who self study.
