I have recently moved to Tampa, Fl area and still looking for employment. Has been about two months and have gotten couple of interviews, but no call backs. One company indicated they were dependent upon future proposal coming through...
Revamped my horrendous first resume and I am asking for opinions on this revamped version. I consider it more of a master resume to draw from in customizing to a particular job announcement. Note: I have eliminated the leading personal information from the beginning. Thanks!

blue skies,

Congratulations on obtaining the interviews. While these unfortunately did not lead to callbacks, it’s an important step in the job application process. I know that you consider this a “master resume to draw from in customizing to a particular job announcement,” but what steps are you taking to customize the document? Do you revise the entire opening section, or just parts of it? This will help me provide a better critique for you.

Thanks,

Warren

If I might offer a suggestion, you might want to earn a graduate degree in an intelligence or space studies or even homeland security specialty to complement your existing work history and the leverage the organizational affiliations you have developed during your career. Also, if you have an active government security clearance, be sure to highlight it on the resume. What types of organizations have you been targeting during your search for employment?

Warren,

I am customizing all parts of the resume depending upon the job announcement. Example, applied yesterday for a IT technical writer position where I reordered items in my profile & core comp. sections; added several more document related accomplishments to two of my past positions; and deleted the last job as system manager to keep the overall length down.
This version is my first overhaul from last version which was to passive in language and detailed to many job duties (read like a job descrip.) instead of accomplishments. Now I am still trying to retain a little bit of job duty type items to clarify the job position; or should I just stick to accomplishments and let the recruiter assume what they wish from the job title? Also, is the overall language 'active' enough?

Thanks, DL

Have been targeting government agencies; private companies who specialize in consulting or contract work with DoD; and private IT firms offering positions I feel I might have a chance at qualifying for.

Yes I have a active clearance, would this be better suited in the core comp. section or other activities at the end?

As for grad school -- not likely. If I was going to take 1-3 years of schooling; I would look into another field at grad school or vocational school. Besides, I need work now.

Highlight the active security clearance near the very top of your resume. I have mine listed in the right-most margin of the resume just above the professional associations to which I belong, though between the objective/headline statement and summary of qualifications works equally well.
