New York City is one of the most expensive places to live on earth. Here is an ad for a programming job on craigslist, for a salary of $55,000.
http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/sof/1448056821.html
They want a "passionate Rock Star" with "extremely high proficiency" in all sorts of things.
What kind of "rock star" would want a salary that will get you a life in literally a closet-sized New York basement apartment with no windows?

Compuware is another company that has gotten into the silly game of asking for "rock star" programmers and the like. I suspect that they are attempting to tap into the upcoming millennial techies who have been told all their lives that they are "special" and that they can be anything they want to be. Well, here's the chance to do just that by becoming a programming "rock star", so laughable and sad at the same time.

Send your kid to college so they can piss away 4 years and 50K+, only to get a "chance" at basically a minimum wage job. Ah, but THIS minimum wage job is a "white collar" minimum wage job. Much higher prestige than a Mcjob, you say....
What is this country coming to?

I tell young Americans to head off into the trades. The ROI on a college degree is terrible.

"The CUNY School of Professional Studies is building a team of developers to extend the Sahana Disaster Management System. The goal of this project is to expand on the existing functionality of this excellent application to meet the needs of an all-hazards response system for the NYC Office of Emergency Management."
So we need "underpaid" "rock star" programmers to help us develop and maintain the Disaster Management System for the NYC Office of Emergency Management.
Glad to see we have critical emergency management systems in the hands of someone with the following:
# Three years experience developing web applications with PHP, MySQL and Javascript # Two years experience as a Perl developer (Python a bonus)
I held a gun when I was ten years old once, maybe I can apply to be a NYPD Officer. $10/hour with benefits - sounds good - I'll just remove the poor homeless guy from the park bench and then sleep on it.
