Am I a little bit pushy?

Recently, I spotted a suitable job. Then, I asked my recruiter to contact that firm on my behalf. My recruiter replied to me that he had spoken to the HR director and would discuss me with her in detail soon. Immediately after his reply, I found another suitable job. Given the tough labor market, I thought I should try as much as possible to increase my possibility of success. Thus, I sent an email to my recruiter and asked him to contact the second firm on my behalf as well. Till now, I have not got his reply yet. I think maybe I am a little bit pushy about job seeking and have made my recruiter feel uncomfortable. If it is, what can I do to alleviate this kind of discomfort. Will I just keep waiting or show my apology to my recruiter by email.

Have you got any interview from the first job yet? Have they offered you job?
If not, then it's alright to pursue several jobs at the same time. Recruiter usually do not mind doing it for you.

If you are wondering why you haven't got any reply from your recruiter, you might want to call and talk to him directly. Maybe he is on vacation?

You are actually doing your recruiter a favor by taking the initiative and finding positions through the recruiting firm for which you feel qualified. Recruiters rarely contact you first unless your resume scores high on their automated query retrieval systems. You are not being pushy, but try to limit the pokes you give the recruiter so as not to become "that annoying *." Best of luck!

Man, it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission. So you may be being pushy but that's ok. The recruiter should appreciate the lead.

That said though, often the recruiter and the account manager that works with the hiring manager or hr are two different people it could be that the recruiter has passed along the info and is awaiting for the account manager to establish contact which is easier said then done.

As an Account Manager I can tell you that it's not nearly as simple as calling up a Director/Manager or HR person and seeing if they want to look at your guy.

Be patient but be persistent.Menawhile, maybe just call your guy and say "sorry if I seem pushy". I can almost guarantee that their fine with everything and it'll be a good chance to get an update while building rapport.

Dear zlin1981,

You are not being too pushy, in fact teaming up with your recruiter can be very effective, and if your recruiter is unwilling to market you to companies that are a good fit for your talents, he or she will have a hard time making it in this tough economy. The thing is, if your recruiter doesn't have a strong relationship with the employers you are suggesting, he or she can try to market you to the company, but it's more of a long shot that they'll bite. Try to pool your efforts around companies where your recruiter has a strong business relationship, that also interest you. That short list of firms represents your career sweet spot.

Good luck.

Thank you all for these informative advice. Soon after I posted the above message, my recruiter replied to me and promised to contact the other firm on my behalf. Around a week later, I sent him an email to enquire the progress. He told me he was still waiting to hear from the two firms which I desired and asked me not to expect things to happen too quickly in a really tough market. About half a month has passed since then and I have not got any further follow up from him yet. For many times, I almost couldn't help writing to him for inquiry. However, I finally refrained myself from doing that each time for the fear of becoming a "pest". Now, I have been afflicted with this dilemma. Dear all, any suggestion?

If I'm working on 'something' with a recruiter, I usually check in every week. One week may be by email, the other week, by phone.

Any recruiter I've worked with, wants me to check in weekly.

Recruiters (unless you know them well) rarely reply to email unless they think they can make a buck out of placing you. They don't think they have to keep anyone informed.

My recruiter told me one of the two firms which I desire was proving more difficult to deal with and suggested me to contact them directly. Does it mean that firm has no interest in me? Will I still need to call them?

Dear zlin1981,

When a company fails to communicate with a recruiter about the status of submitted candidates, it's hard to know what's going on. Potentially the reviewers received candidate resumes that were a better match from other recruiters; it's also possible that a suitable candidate responded to a posting on the company's website, or an internal or referred candidate emerged. It definitely seems like your recruiter doesn't have a strong relationship with this particular client and I would guess that he or she is trying to break into the company. Clarify with your recruiter whether the company will still be obligated to pay a fee if you are hired as a result of your own marketing efforts before contacting the company. If the agency is backing out of the deal, be sure and inform any managers or recruiters at the company about your status change, because they'll want to verify your free agent status with the agency.

Good luck

A recruiter can't represent a candidate to approach a firm if he has sent his CV to that firm directly. However, if a candidate speculatively enquires a firm about its current openings with an e-mail in which he briefly introduces himself without the attachment of his CV, will it be defined as the case in which a recruiter can't represent him? Thanks.

They basically toss your resume with a tens of other resumes and hope the client will pick one. So they dont' care, or even care about asking their client about a particular resume. For them if they get any hit on any of these, it's great.

No you're not being pushy. But try and work with a firm which has good values and relationships with client and are a bit personal to them. Although hard to find in this economy and situation.
