So it's going on 3 months now and no offers. I'm getting bored reading up on IT stuff to keep my mind fresh. So I ask the denizens of Dice, what are you doing to pass the time till another job? It's too tempting to lay around and play xbox all day. I need some ideas.

What is your area of specialty? Programming? Network Administration? Help Desk? Technical Writer? Database Architect? Do you have a degree and/or certifications?

If you are a programmer, you might participate in an open source project hosted by SourceForge.net which if your patches or other contributions are accepted your name will be attached to the source code for anyone to verify.

If you have an interest in starting a business or consulting work, you could research the types of businesses, particularly small and medium sized, to determine what types of IT services they might need. There are a lot of free software and open source software available to address almost every business need and you can use the time between job searches to learn about and play around with this software; it is free.

If you have an interest in some field other than IT now might be a good time to explore and discover what requirements, if any, that field imposes upon entrants.

Remember, get outdoors daily for at least 60 minutes of walking or evening sitting in the park. Staying indoors will surely drive you batty after awhile.

Try doing something industrious or laborious. Good exercise or change of pace and you feel a sense of accomplishment. It really frees up the mind and makes you better at IT when the opportunity comes again. Hope that helps!

Sell your house and move.

I trained my dog and got a therapy dog certificate. I figured it would keep me busy and look good when applying for jobs. I also sold stuff on eBay and craigslist. It kept me busy (annoyingly), I made some dough, and thinned the house contents. I fixed a number of things on my house. I also read a SQL book and took other refresher courses.
