Resume rejected online in less than 20 minutes

I applied for a position with a large defence contractor through their online system. In less than 20 minutes I received a rejection message claiming that "Management had thoroughly reviewed my resume and concluded I was not a good fit." Now I really doubt their HR system is so top notch that they can receive an application and resume, pass it on to hiring managers for review and get feedback in less than 20 minutes.

You'ed be surprised. With the state technology is in right now, it is entirely possible. Especially if the submittal goes directly to the Hiring Manager via the e-mail address or the link on the website. Or, if, when you submitted your resume, the Recruiter was there on-line reviewing all those that applied.
For example, almost all resumes in response to ads I have posted come directly to me, and I review them as they come in (if I'm not presently speaking with a candidate). I can review a resume very quickly, especially since I know the specific requirements for our positions, and can make a decision based upon that knowledge in less than a minute (if the skills aren't there, the person isn't qualified). Technically, I could respond to the negative in less than five minutes from submittal, which would make the candidate suspect software, but that's not the case.
To help prevent that, I typically wait an hour or more before I respond to the negative, and sometimes overnight (I save the turn-down as a draft before I move on to the next resume/submittal).
On the other hand, when someone IS qualified for the position, I can still respond to the positive in less than a minute, which surprises many of them at how quickly I am able to respond to their submittal. Works both ways...

The buzzword filter chewed up your resume and spit it back out in your face.

You're right... they let a bunch of machines do all the filtering and the "thinking"...
