New approach to knocking on doors?

Got laid off and have been looking for a few months now. I have had a few interviews but no offers yet. Well last week I was trying to think of a way to be a little more aggressive in my search. So what I did was to I looked at all the online business journals in my area that I could find. Went through them to find any companies that were mentioned in them that had a website listed. Went to the websites and tried to find a careers page. Some had a posting stating no openings but many had the standard "we are always looking for talented people......blah, blah, blah." Well the ones that had that got an email with my resume and cover letter. I got three calls from doing this and got two interview. One on Thursday and another next week. Both said that they just lost someone and remembered recently getting my resume. Maybe it is just good timing or good luck but I guess you never know.
Hope this helps someone else in their search and good luck.

Dear fm1,,
Thanks for sharing your success story. It just goes to show that taking the initiative in this job market can indeed pay off. I'm sure many employers are reluctant to post job openings right now, for fear of being bombarded by qualified and unqualified job seekers. Opportunistic employers are looking to benefit from the plethora of available talent in the marketplace, but they don't have to advertise to source quality candidates, because the really hungry job seekers are coming to them.
Good luck.

I did that too when I was looking a year ago. It's painful work. Like crawling for 10 miles with no water in a desert with your eyes shut. I didn't get any hits though.
Lieslie maybe right -- Companies don't want to put out adds right now so maybe you hit oil.
